Janette's Suicide

Description

I live in a big victorian house which was build by the Deyo family in 1898. It was considered an upper class family back then. They had a daughter who fell in love with a man from a local cannery when she was around 18(bordering Wallkill and Walden NY). Her parents forbid her to be with him because he was a lower class factory worker, so she went insane and was sent to a mental hospital. She was around 18. When she was 22 or so she was released and sent back home(around 1920). She still didn't accept that she could not be with her one true love so she hung herself in my sisters room.
For the model and reference photo I used my sister, her boyfriend and the room which it occured.
The clown face symbolizes how her family viewed him.. a factory worker.. just a clown, a man with no face or significant identity. The empty jar he is holding symbolizes all that he can offer her.. nothing.

Agreed. This needs more comments.

Dark, disturbing... why would a "lowly" factory worker have nothing to offer? Sure, no big business dealings, but love is better than money. I can see a bleeding heart in that jar... money can be made with time and effort, love not so much... either it is or is not. I say Janette's father is a prick. He probably didn't care when she died, except for the funeral expenses which he cursed of course.

See, he could've sanctioned the relationship, and taught the new kid business, and welcomed him in. Instead, look what happened... what a waste.

These paintings have stories to tell, mysteries to explore...
